The spotlight (Tokyo, Japan) (by marcusuke)
The auction is now over, but don’t dismiss this page -
scroll down to the bottom and read the description he’s written.
Not only is it fabulous writing, but he updates the description as, what was originally just, the sale of a secondhand wetsuit turns into a fundraising auction event.

This is a difficult question to answer. My dream destination would be Japan. However, it’s expensive to get there, I don’t know anyone who lives there, and I don’t speak Japanese.
New Zealand, however, is a bit easier. Obviously I speak the language, I have family & friends living there, I’ve been before & I know exactly where I would like to go to on a second visit.
So it’s between those two. NZ is a feasible place to visit, but I have spent years and years dreaming of going to Japan. Years of fanatically watching Sailor Moon (in Japanese, with subtitles) and Cardcaptors and Tsubasa and Pokemon and Digimon(!), trying to learn funny little phrases, trying to get ahold of decently published manga books (in England, not easy) like Bride of the Water God (which is beautiful, I’ll post a picture)
Have you ever read Memoirs of a Geisha? Or the Tales of the Otori? I love the tea ceremony, I love the temples, shrines, the water gardens, the cherry blossoms, rituals, lanterns, the omens… I love the pretty lights, the robots, the technology, chopsticks, the sushi, the kawaii, the couture, harajuku, fans, bags, kimono cloth…
I’ll leave it there. I don’t know if any of that reflects what Japan is actually like, but frankly the only way I’ll accept myself being wrong is when I experience it for myself for real. So one day I will learn Japanese and I will go and it will be amazing.
